While riding Empire Builder on 18 and 19 May I asked why Capitol Limited now departed 30 minutes earlier from Chicago? Train conductor said construction crews were enlarging tunnels on the line in Pennsylvania to accomodate higher profile box cars. That meant blasting in tunnels. Trains have to time their passing through tunnels to avoid blasting delays.
 
This could actually be true. I've heard CSX is "daylighting" something, whatever that means, at the Pinkerton Horn between Confluence and Rockwood, PA.

Means taking the tops off of tunnels, so they aren't tunnels anymore, but rather sort of open-air trenches, hence the term.
