I have told this little story several times on this forum. In 2011, due to delays of a blizzard closing the line of the SWC across Missouri and being re-routed through St. Louis, we arrived over 10 hours late at around 1:30 am in Chicago. ( I will say the train crews took excellent care of us. ) Going out to Canal Street, could I find a cab to hail? No. After about 10 or 15 minutes of this I said never mind and dragged my baggage a little over a mile at 2 am across the very deserted streets of Chicago to my hotel on North State Street. It was very cold, about 13 degrees, but luckily no wind and the streets had been well plowed. I traipsed into the lobby around 2:15 am to an incredulous desk clerk. I told him I had had just walked from Union Station. " Oh, no, you didn't! I would have sent a cab for you! " he gasped. I replied " What cab? " It was a relief to finally arrive in that nice hotel room. There now, did I make you feel better?
