Right now, three trains listed on Amtrak Status Maps have a purple stripe at the top and bottom of the train number. Click on those trains, and an engine number is listed. It is not listed on all other trains. What is the significance?

These stripes mean that it is a 40th Anniversary Locomotive or something along those lines.

Right now we're tracking some special engines. They are the anniversary repaints: 66, 145, 156, 184, 406, 822

and additionally 2 engines that Trains magazine is tracking for an article later this year: 44 and 90. 44 was the lead engine on the president's inaugural express. 90 is an ordinary engine, perhaps picked at random.

The good folks at http://4rr.com are doing the legwork keeping track of the engines. I'm just putting them on the maps. By the way, if you know of a movement of one of these engines on a regular Amtrak train, and it's not shown on the map, please post it on this forum. The gathering of the engine movements is very much a manual effort, and we could use the help.

Finally, sometimes the engines only cover a segment of the train's trip. In that case you'll see the endpoints denoted along with the engine number, such as

* Eng: 156 SEA - SPK .

John why is 90 listed exactly? I have always wondered..

Per the Trains Newswire, "And No. 90 is an average unit; it is set for engine replacement in May." Full excerpt here. Sounds like AMTK 90 was chosen to represent its everyday, hard-working brethren that are out there keeping America connected.
