Amtrak online vs active agent

I went on Amtrak.com and it was sold out for my sleeper date.

I called Amtrak agent and they had accommodations for my sleeper date.

Whats's going on?

How much time elapsed between the first and second sentence? There's always the chance someone

canceled and the inventory was added back into the system.

I wonder if someone was just checking prices and cleared their cart before you called? I do that sometimes.

I usually do both, they take turns at being cheaper.

The online system is more than slightly messed up when it comes to sleeper reservations, which should never be made online until the pricing bug is fixed.
