Determined to keep an Amtrak presence in Port Huron, a group of the rail line's supporters rallied Sunday at the 16th Street station.

People such as Cheryl Langolf, 46, of Worth Township, who uses the train to visit family, and people such as Erin Doering, 20, of Fort Gratiot, who often rides the train home from Michigan State University in East Lansing, are joining to again save Amtrak.

"It's my lifeline to get back and forth to Port Huron," said Doering, a junior at MSU. "It would break my heart to see it go."

Signing petitions and talking about the rail line's benefit to seniors, the disabled and low-income residents the group of supporters hopes to convince state legislators $1 million in budget cuts to the service would have a severe impact on many people.

The Michigan House and Senate each have passed 2006 budgets reflecting the cut to Amtrak's $7.1 million state subsidy - a move rail-company officials said will force them to halt the Blue Water Line, which runs between Port Huron and Chicago, and the Pere Marquette in western Michigan.
