Doing this out of sheer boredom, but here goes-- if you ever find yourself in Alliance, OH here are all the local things to see and do... Alliance is located in the Western part of Stark County, OH. The 'Carnation City' is a small former industrial town, home to Mount Union University, a large private university of which there are many in the area. Canton Ohio, where I am from, is a twenty minute drive from Alliance and the seat of the county. Canton is the home of the Timken Co. which supplies steel ball bearings for the military. At one point during the Cold War a Russian ICBM was supposedly targeted right on top of the Timken planet because at the time there wasn't a single vehicle in the military that wasn't using their parts. Canton is the adopted home of President William McKinely, his monument and Presidential Library and Museum is located in the city park. The marble stairs up the hill to his tomb are a popular work out spot. Arguably Canton's most famous claim to fame is football, the American kind. The Professional Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, an annual festival celebrates new inductees and sees the NFL put on their first pre-season game in Fawcett Stadium. The stadium is shared with McKinley High School, my alma mater. If you're a football fan you'll also want to visit Massillon, the town twenty minutes to the West of Canton. Massillon is the home of Paul Brown, who founded two Ohio NFL franchises (the Browns and the Bengals). Massillon Washington High School plays the oldest high school football rivalry game with McKinley, the Tigers and the Bulldogs have been facing off since 1894. Also to see in Canton is the First Ladies National Historic Site, as well as the Canton Classic Car Museum. Also nearby is the Rubber City, Akron OH to the North. Southern Stark County is Amish Country, there are also vineyards and Penn Dutch markets. Twenty minutes North of Canton is Hartville, home to a large flea market and a community of Mennonite businesses. For lodging I recommend the chain hotels up in North Canton, also the ones near the Akron-Canton airport. If you're the type that likes old luxury the McKinley Grand Hotel in downtown Canton will suit you. Hopefully this helps one person plan a trip so that this was not all in vain.
