It's not pathetic. Sadly it's an addiction, nicotine is a drug. Smokers are hooked, just like any other drug user. It's not easy to kick the habit, in fact many specialist's in drug addiction consider smoking/nicotine a harder drug to get off of than many of the other illegal drugs.

Yes, I believe its more addictive than Heroine.
 
We had a guy on the train yesterday who was jonesing for his nicotine so badly that he had to get off at every stop to steal a few quick puffs. When we were delayed at a station for 20 minutes he must have smoked 4 or 5 cigarettes. Addictions make people do some crazy things.
