I read at one point that Amtrak, at one time, ran 84-seat coaches on some corridor routes. This brings to mind a couple of questions:

1) When were these pulled?

2) Was the space that those extra rows of seats took up mainly grabbed from the "open space" at each end of the car that a lot of coaches have now? Or was the legroom tighter? (Or a bit of both?)

3) How did these compare with the PC "roach coaches" in terms of comfort? And how many did those seat?

I wasn't aware that any of the 84 seat coaches survived into the Amtrak era. New Haven did have some 84 seat American Flyer types coaches that ran on the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak did have some 72 coaches, most of which had New Haven Heritage except for 1 which was ex Northern Pacific, MKT Heritage, Amtrak also had some 70 seat coaches were of RF&P Heritage that ran on the NEC, but were originally built for RF&P local trains from Wasington to Richmond. The higher capcity coaches seemed to be longer because they did have restrooms.

Amfleet Is had 84 seats before they were reconfigured for ADA purposes.
