Sunset Limited along the International Border

Heading back to the original topic, the one time that I've been on the Sunset, we had the DEA come into the TE sleeper and accompany someone off of the train who had some large amount of marijuana hidden in his roomette. To make it worse, he was at the same time unable to prove his citizenship...

    Entertaining an Amtrak vacation.

Bringing your own food/non-alcoholic drinks on board is no problem. Amtrak has drinking water spigots in the coaches, occasionally with cups. Most Amtrak stations are within walking distance of hotels. Don't know about hostels. The train can get pretty ful, but even in a full coach, I don't find...

    Who travels the greatest distance?

    1. I've never actually been to the Vancouver station, I always end up starting from somewhere south, or Toronto. 2. I hope that's a rhetorical question. 3. Currently there's no snow on the ground, as I'm sitting poolside in Phoenix, but back home, the pile of snow i've shoveled from the...

    Who travels the greatest distance?

When I travel Amtrak, the nearest station would probably be Vancouver. A whopping 1466 miles, or 31 hours.

Viewliner roomette on LSL - NYP-CHI

It may have been referring to the superliner lounges.

    VIA derailment today (2/26/12)

I wonder what caused this. Makes you wonder how safe travel by train really is.

    Cresent from Atlanta to NOLA

I love being technologically connected, and can't travel anywhere without both my iPhone and my iPad, but when I'm on the train, I love just watching the american scenery roll by. (But I do go on FB at least once a day)

amtrak ld differences from via ld

It should be noted that although you do have a private toilet for daytime use, when the bed is made up, it covers the toilet, requiring you to use public facilities, or move the bed enough to access the toilet.

Viewliner Roomette: Upper or Lower bunk

Upper— I like being able to roll sideways, and look out the window while lying down. The idea of lying beside the toilet also bugs me. Finally, if you're traveling alone, you can keep the chairs made up, ideal for reading before going to bed or after waking up.

    Paying for Amtrak trip

I would assume that as long as there is sufficient credit on the card, it would work the same as a regular Visa card. I've used Visa gift cards online to purchase anything from electronics to pizzas. I dont see why Amtrak would be any different.

AFAIK, those diagrams don't have any errors, but either way, here are the diagrams you're looking for: http://discuss.amtraktrains.com/index.php?/topic/45998-new-car-floor-plans/page__fromsearch__1

    Showers on Superliners

You might want to take a look at the Superliner sleeper virtual tour. http://www.amtrak.com/media/train_tour/superliner/superlinerSLEEPER_CONTROLLER.html

    16 year old denied passage

I too think that Amtrak needs to loosen up thier policy somewhat. I'm 14. Last summer I traveled to Africa on my own, I think I'd be able to make it through the NEC without a problem. I love my independence, and I hate rules like this that restrict it.

Stay out of lower level roommettes?

Doesn't it say somewhere in the Amtrak Service Standards Manual that OBS aren't allowed to smoke on duty. I hate the smell of cigarette smoke, and if it was coming into my roomette, I'd want to report it to Amtrak, and especially if it was smoke from an OBS employee.

Man dies after getting hit by train in St. Tammany

Such a shame, but it's hard to believe that someone would actually sleep on railroad tracks consciously. It's sad to hear about accidents such as this, but it makes me wonder how incidents like this can be prevented.

    Traveling to Portland

That sounds like what I'm doing this march, only on a larger scale. Myself and my friend (we're both 14) are traveling from Maricopa to Toronto in sleeper. Anyway, there should be no problem as long as you don't make yourselves a huge disturbance. You and your friends will have a blast.

    First trip on Coast Starlight

Be sure to spend most of your time awake in the PPC. You will get much better views, and get to interact with fellow passengers.

    Texas Eagle and Wolverine

The four hour connection should be easy enough to make, assuming that you aren't extremely late. The two hour connection shouldn't be too tight either, but in the case of a missed connection, Amtrak should handle accommodation and meals.

10-6 Heritage Sleeper vs. 14-3 Viewliner

When the OP was mentioning three bedrooms, they must have been referring to the two regular bedrooms + an accessible room.
