As a follow up question, HOW do you actually tip? As meals are already paid for, do you just leave some cash on the table? What about the SCA? When and how should they be tipped?

Thanks for the replies. It's not just about cost, but also inconvenient and infrequent train timings. All part of the US adventure though! Bus information very helpful.

We're going to stay 2 nights at the Izaak Walton in October, stopping off on New York to Seattle trip. We're not planning any serious hikes but hopefully will be able to do a couple of not too strenuous walks and some chilling watching the trains. Very much looking forward to it.

We're now booked and it's all sorted. It does indeed seem to be a system glitch when booking online, but it resolves itself on the following pages. Didn't book by phone as in the UK. The plan is New York - Chicago - Essex, Montana - 2 nights in Isaak Walton Inn - then back on train to Seattle...

Sorry, I maybe wasn't clear. We only want one room on each train, but the test booking shows a 2 - don't know if that's a room for 2 or two rooms. And the EB is opposite, showing a 1, hopefully 1 room not for 1 person. It's hard to describe!
