This Committee is more level-headed, and it has some very powerful pro-Amtrak voices on both sides of the aisle. I see some anti-Amtrak voices on the Republican side (McConnell, Shelby), but they are clearly outnumbered. The Senate as a whole is more level-headed than the House, so gives us plenty more to hope for; however, we need to lobby our Senators in every state to do what is right for America and save our national rail system. It's not a Republican versus Democrat issue, it's not a liberal versus conservative issue, it's an issue of meeting the needs of the country at a reasonable cost.

A family member lives in WV, and called Sen. Robert C. Byrd's office to express support for Amtrak. While the cagey senator's office didn't indicate what level of funding he would support during the committee mark-up, they did include the part of the Congressional Record concerning Sen. Byrd's introduction of an amendment providing $1.4 billion for Amtrak in FY 2006. This is the March Amtrak funding amendment which went down on a party-line vote.

From the Congressional Record -- Senate, March 15, 2005, page S2694:

Mr. Byrd. <snip>

Some of my colleagues may be wondering how I arrived at the funding figure of $1.4 billion for Amtrak for 2006.  My answer is as follows:  When President Bush submitted his budget request for fiscal year 2005, has asked for $900 million for 2005.  But in that same budget, the President recognized that funding should grow to $1.4 billion in 2006 and beyond.  So, my proposal to bring Amtrak to $1.4 billion in 2006 is precisely the same number that President Bush had budgeted for Amtrak for 2006 just one year ago.

Commitee just approved $1.45 billion for Amtrak today!
