Transportation report spells danger for Amtrak

First published: Monday, December 5, 2005

Your coverage of the ongoing Bush-Cheney, conservative-corporate and right wing evisceration of America's heroic public rail passenger system -- Amtrak -- is providing a public service and should be commended.

The recent ouster of savvy Amtrak CEO David Gunn is an indication that even more trouble looms, as your recent editorial ("Derailing Mr. Gunn," Nov. 11) points out.

Kenneth Mead, Department of Transportation Inspector General, has issued a report advocating elimination of sleeping and dining cars and checked baggage on Amtrak's long-distance trains. The inspector general thinks this drastic reduction in service quality would boost Amtrak's bottom line and slash the need for further government funding.
