A good history.

To pick up sort of as it ends would be about 1949-50 when it was completely re equipped as a stainless steel lightweight streamliner.

The article makes clear that the original route of the Crescent south of Atlanta was via Montgomery and Mobile.

Today's routing via Birmingham and Meridian was the result of combining the former Crescent and the former Southerner into the Southern Crescent, which title it held from about 1971 to 1979.

The article also notes that the station used today was built to be a suburban stop, thus the small size.

It is probably safe to say that most name trains on Amtrak today had a similarly involved history as here noted.
