Besides the Train museum and the state capital, Old
Sacramento along with the river front are interesting. The Sacramento Zoo, weather permitting is good. My birth place 347 39th way is probably not in the top 100 on most lists

Sacramento is a decent stepping-off place for touring Napa wine country when compared to the costs of the Bay area. Other attractions include the Jelly Belly factory and the California side of Lake Tahoe is a reasonable drive.

The Napa wine country is a little over an hour from Sacramento. If you have the time, the Napa Valley wine train is a lot of fun and has great, gourmet meals on board. The basic daytime run is around 3 hours on a trip to St. Helena and back. I have heard that the exterior of the train looks a little worn. Not inexpensive. The trip costs around $240 and up. Also, if you're not full enough from the wine train, there's the French Laundry restaurant in Yountville, about 15 min. from Napa. Also not inexpensive. A meal will cost around $310. However, you don't have to wear a KN95 mask.

We made a similar conection to the CZ but from the souhbound CS. We had a very enjoyable day and night in Sacramento. We didn't venture beyond Old Town Sacramento and the Railroad Museum and had plenty to do. A highlight for us was a night on the Delta King docked in Old Town. The history of the Delta King is fascinating. It does get mixed reviews as the rooms are small, and missing some of the amenities and improvements of modern hotel rooms. But if you enjoy a small room on Amtrak, this is even better. We enjoyed drinks and dinner there too. Oh, and check out Danny's mini donuts for some 'health' food. Our only caveat is this was 8 years ago.
