Come participate in the 2013 French Connection—a four-day immersion get-away in Hearst by train.

This fall, participants will have the opportunity to travel up to Hearst, Ontario aboard the Algoma Central Railway. Along the way they will witness some of the country’s most beautiful natural scenery including the Agawa Canyon, some of the best Group of Seven painting sites as well as numerous lakes and rivers, private cottages and wilderness lodges, towering trestles and the vast mixed forests of the Canadian Shield ablaze with autumn splendor. Most people are surprised to hear that there is a French speaking area in Ontario. Many think the only part of Canada that speaks French (except certain areas of certain cities) is the Province of Quebec!

About a third of the population in the province of New Brunswick is French speaking. Most are of Acadian (think Louisiana Cajun) descent.

Moncton, is a large bilingual city and as VIA’s Ocean continues north from there, it passes through several other Acadian communities including Campbellton.

And depending on how one counts, 5-10% of the Quebec population say that English is their main language. The percentage is higher on the west side of Montreal.
