Is it better for the car to go on early or late in order to get it off sooner on the autotrain

There is no way to predict things at all. Mainly because the auto racks are divided up differently at each station, since the track lengths vary. So you could be there first and be first off at the other end or you could end up being last off at the other end. There is simply no way to predict things.

The Team Whooz MayhemMobile went on very early at Lorton, then came off roughly in the middle of unloading at Sanford. 379 passengers aboard that run (7-27-11 departure), and IIRC 112 motor vehicles.
