Dear Friends of Amtrak:

What follows is a NARP (National Association of Railroad Passengers)

Action Alert. Now that the legislative process on Capitol Hill has

begun it is important for all of us to make contact with those who

represent us.

=====================================================

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, and

Housing and Urban Development, The Judiciary, District of Columbia plans

to "mark up" (approve) its fiscal year 2007 funding bill--which includes

Amtrak funding -- on Wednesday, May 24. After that, the full

Appropriations Committee is likely to take up the bill either the first

or second full week in June.

Please call your member of the House of Representative with a message of

support to fully fund Amtrak. This is particularly important if your

legislator is on the subcommittee.

You may use NARP's "Call Congress Now" Action Hotline to contact your

Representative's Washington, D.C. office at no cost to you. The number

is 1-800-679-1581. When prompted, enter our access code: 1189. Please

make this call during normal House business hours, which are generally

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The system permits you to contact both your

House and Senate members. Your Senators will be presented as the first

two options, then your House member will be presented as option three.

Please press "3" to speak to your House member.

(Note to Washington, D.C. residents: the system sometimes does not

recognize District zip codes. The local number for Rep. Elanor Holmes

Norton is 202-225-8050.)

Your Representative needs to continue to hear strong messages of support

for Amtrak from his or her constituents, especially given the

tighter-than-ever budgetary pressures this year. In light of the world

energy situation, slashing Amtrak funding would be foiolish. I have

provided you with a sample message below; please personalize it as much

as possible. But, the most important thing is to call, make your voice

heard, and register your opinion!

If your Representative is not on the committee, please still communicate

with them and ask them to push their colleagues in Appropriations for

full Amtrak funding.

Sample message to your Representative:

My name is Joe Smith and I live at {Give physical mailing address in

your Representative's district. Be sure to indicate if you are a

business owner.}. I am a strong supporter of passenger rail. Please

fully fund Amtrak's appropriation request--made by an Amtrak Board 100%

appointed by President Bush--of $1.596 billion. Funding at the

Administration-requested level of $900 million is not sufficient and now

is the wrong time to slash Amtrak's budget, especially in light of

ever-rising gas prices and a deepening energy crisis in the United

States.

My Representative is not on the list. However I did email him and urge him to urge his colleagues to approve Amtrak funding.
