From Evan Stair, Executive Director of PassengerRail OK:

All,

We are pleased to announce that the Guthrie special extensions of the

Heartland Flyer are now available. Here are the details:

The Guthrie city code is GUT

The Northbound train (Number 822), operates from Fort Worth to Guthrie (and all points in between) from September 29th to October 1st. The train will leave Oklahoma City at 9:50pm and will reach Guthrie at

10:55pm.

The Southbound train (Number 821), operates from Guthrie to Fort Worth September 30th to October 2nd. The train will leave Guthrie at 7:15am and will reach Oklahoma City by 8:15am.

As of right now, you MUST call 1-800-USA-RAIL and ask for a live agent when prompted. If the agent acts like they don't know what you are

talking about, tell them to check the following in ARROW...

G/MGC/SEP/P65

I think the round trip fare is around $20.

From Evan Stair, Executive Director of PassengerRail OK:

The reservations for the Guthrie Special Trains can now be made on

Amtrak.com using the city code GUT. We may have some bus

transportation between OKC and Guthrie for the Saturday Southbound run.

SPECIAL BUS SERVICE TO RUN GUTHRIE & OKC

Oklahoma Railroad Musem (ORM) member Steve Davis is going to be

operating a bus in conjunction with the Guthrie Special Amtrak trips.

Due to the fact that the train will arrive in Guthrie just before 11:00pm and leave at 7:15am, one way rail trips may be desired along with a bus trip back to your destination. Please contact Steve at 232-1972. His fare is $5. BE SURE AND GIVE STEVE A BIG TIP! He is charging "at cost" for his operation. Special Thanks to Steve and ORM for this quick thinking and also accomodation for those who cannot stay in Guthrie.

SUGGESTION TO RAIL TRIP ORGANIZERS

We are hoping that the next time one of these rail trips is scheduled,

there will be 1) more lead time given and 2) there will be more

coordination between PassengerRailOk.org and event organizers. We are getting to word out as fast as we can. We received very little advance warning that the rail trips were going to run. We are here to help! PassengerRailOk.org provides project management for rail events in the region.

Steve,

let us know if you need to operate multiple runs and if you need

anything else. I will get the word out.

ONE STOP CLOSER TO KANSAS CITY FOLKS!

THIS TRAIN CANNOT FAIL!

NEXT STOP PERRY!

From Evan Stair, Executive Director of PassengerRail OK:

RARE MILEAGE COLLECTORS

There is a breed of railfan who is rarely seen in public. They are a

secret society. They seize every opportunity to ride trains over rails

that have not seen a passneger train in decades or have always been

considered freight only. I am now expecting full Guthrie trains, despite the lack of hotel/motel rooms in Guthrie and lack of marketing. This should REALLY be interesting. The news is spreading like WILDFIRE.

RARE MILEAGE GUT-OKC

The Mileage Collectors have been informed of the OKC to Guthrie Run

(Thanks to that special person... You know who you are...). Because of

this, I suspect that we will be seeing full Guthrie trains.

PassengerRailOk.org and its members are proud to have played a part in the persistant campaign to push the Governor's office and the Legislature that finally made this trip happen despite incredible

bureaucratic resistance. You know the story dating back to 2002. You

know of our Depot Open House events held in Gordon Neff's Old Santa Fe Depot.

HISTORY OF THE GUT-OKC ROUTE

The last regularly scheduled passenger train to plod over the Oklahoma

City to Guthrie rails was the LONE STAR. It last ran in October of 1979 and was proceeded by the Santa Fe's TEXAS CHIEF. Here we go folks, riding long dormant passenger rails! It is a new beginning that will hopefully see another section of this grand old route restored in short order. I encourage everyone to take every opportunity to ride these special trips. SHOW THE LEGISLATURE THAT YOU WANT GUTHRIE AS A PERMANENT STOP!

SPECIAL THANKS TO MY FRIENDS

We hopefully will find that the floodgates are now wide open and the

channel leads all the way to Kansas City. I would like to especially

thank my friends Phil Moseley, Lester Terry, Norma Hatfield, Gordon

Neff, John Woodard, and Sandy Fraga whose support of the Guthrie trip

was so critical to breaking the barrier just north of the Oklahoma City

Santa Fe depot. They won't receive credit for our victory, but will

always be remembered fondly for their contribution to the Guthrie

project. I would also like to thank the National Association of Railroad Passengers www.narprail.org for their help in making this happen. I watched as they worked some real magic. I have always been a critic of NARP, but their recent dedication and attention to this event has restored my belief in their organization. They are showing real change.

FOLKS... NEXT STOP... PERRY!!!!

Those who have access to ARROW need only look to the first ticket

purchased and think about what has happened over the past four years.

From Evan Stair, Executive Director of PassengerRail OK:

This comes from ORM Member Steve Davis... We all need to give Steve a big THANK YOU for offering to do this.

For the Southbound train (Guthrie to Oklahoma City), the ORM bus will be leaving promptly at 5:45 am from Oklahoma Railway Museum 3400 NE Grand Boulevard OKC. This is west of I-35 and Northeast 36th street and south at the first light which is Grand Boulevard. You can take a nap on the bus as you prepare for the journey from Guthrie to Oklahoma City.

Paved parking is available for our Amtrak riders, (park along the north

fence please). They will be picked up promptly upon their arrival in front of Oklahoma City's Santa Fe ( Amtrak ) Depot and returned to ORM for their vehicles.

ORM is also operating trains that day. Stay and ride ORM's trains to

complete a rail day Oklahoma should not soon forget.

The ORM bus may run as far south as Norman if there is a demand. Check with Steve Davis if you are interested. Steve is also providing his e-mail address: [email protected].

From the Oklahoman, 9/22/05:

Guthrie on board for train service
When the Heartland Flyer pulls into Guthrie's Old Santa Fe Depot on Sept. 29, it will be the first Amtrak arrival in the city since 1979, but not the last, city officials said hopefully.
This story can be found here. May require free registration.

I think it would be great to be able to catch the HF in Guthrie at least untill they get it extended into Kansas. At least the parking should be cheaper in Guthrie than OK City.

My kids scouting stuff was rescheduled, so I got tickets to go from GUT to OKC saturday. This should be pretty cool. Lodging was hard to find even in OKC with all the evacuees in the area and OU and OSU home football games.
