To the editor:
In its editorial opposing Amtrak funding, The Daily Mining Gazette
appears to oppose the idea of subsidies for transportation in
general. Fine. Let's start by eliminating another transportation
subsidy: the so-called "Essential Air Service" program.
The only problem with that is it would eliminate airline service
within driving distance of Houghton. But that's OK. We can't have
subsidies, can we?
The cheap airline tickets you cite in the editorial are cheap only
because the airlines, like every other form of transportation, are
subsidized by taxpayers.
