Chicago Union Station baggage storage/layover questions

We will be traveling from Pittsburg to Chicago and then to Vancouver, WA and will have a 6 hour layover before boarding the Empire Builder to Vancouver, WA. We will have one checked bag and two carry ons. Will the checked bag get automatically transfered to the Empire Builder from the Capitol Limited or will we have to deal with it plus the two carry ons? Is there secure baggage storage at the station?

Yes, your checked baggage will be transferred from one train by Amtrak baggage employees and will not require your intervention. If you are traveling by sleeper you will be entitled to use the lounge in Chicago and there is a reasonably safe self-storage room adjacent to the lounge front desk. Your checked bags will be transferred by Amtrak, just like checked bags are transferred by airlines on connecting flights
