We will be boarding In Los Angeles. Will we be given assigned seats? How can we avoid ending up in the back of the train AGAIN? How early shall we arrive?

Talk to the staff and let them know of your concerns when you board. If they insist on seating you in the last car anyway then as soon as they disappear simply grab your destination slips above your seat and put them up in another car. If you're asked to move by a car attendant then calmly explain the problem and hopefully they'll understand and leave you alone. Also, try not to make multiple threads for the same question.

Usually, the paper for drop-off stations will be post on each coach cars. And some of them may assigned passengers to specific seats. That way, the attendants can keep track of passengers for drop-off stations.

I'd agree with some of these, although I would simply kindly ask your car attendant if you can move to another car, that way they don't lose track of who is where.
