I believe the first Railpass started at $150 in 1975. Anyway... I began my adventure in October 1976 with a $165 pass:

10/10 Arv Emporia KS in the early morning and transfer to the SOUTHWEST LTD.

10/11 Arv. Los Angeles

10/11 Lv. L.A. on the COAST STARLIGHT

10/11 Arv. Oakland and transfer by bus to S.F. to lay over

10/12 Lv. Oakland on COAST STARLIGHT

10/13 Arv. Portland to lay over

10/14 Lv. Portland for Seattle on the PUGET SOUND

10/14 Lv. Seattle on the EMPIRE BUILDER which at that time traversed Washington on the NP/SP&S route to Spokane

10/16 Arv. Chicago

10/16 Lv. Chicago on the BROADWAY LIMITED

10/17 Arv. New York Penn Station to lay over with friend in NJ

10/18 Lv. New York on the MONTREALER

10/18 Arv. Montreal to lay over

10/20 Lv. Montreal on the ADIRONDACK (all D&H equipment!)

10/20 Arv. New York and transfer to the BICENTENNIAL

10/20 Arv. N. Philadelphia (scary station!)

10/20 Transfer to NIGHT OWL pulled by a GG-1.

10/21 Arv. Providence, RI

10/21 Lv. Providence on the MINUTE MAN back to NY

10/22 Lv. NY Grand Central on the LAKE SHORE LTD.

10/23 Arv. Chicago and transfer to the LONE STAR

10/24 Arv. home in Houston (10,885 miles later)

Got some photos but no scanner!

I made a similar trip in Canada in October 1977.

Well look at that!......we met near Emporia early in the morning of Oct 10/76! You departed at 4am and I arrived at 4:15am!

I did another RailPass trip also in 1977 and will be posting that report as soon as I get all the slides scanned.

Funny thing about that trip: I kept seeing passengers in one part of the country that I had seen earlier in another part. I even spotted one girl walking down a Manhattan street that I had seen a week earlier on the train to L.A.

I learned to bathe (sorta) in the lounge area of the men's restrooms in the heritage coaches. This was still the era of mostly pre-Amtrak passenger equipment. There was some Amfleet in the East.

I wish I had ridden the NORTH COAST HIAWATHA. It was not departing Seattle the day I wanted to head east. I didn't want to wait there another day either.
