Hi,

Looking at Maple Leaf options and fares New York to Toronto, I noticed that the through booking came up at $128. (There is no "senior fare" available cross border...)

However, by booking two tickets, NYP to Buffalo BFX, and then BFX to Toronto, all on the same Maple Leaf train, the total cost is $110.

Even better for seniors, as the over 62 fare is available on the US only portion, taking another $10 off the fare.

There are few cross border trains, but are there other popular examples of splitting tickets like this to save cash?

Ed.

Well, there are still zone antics to be had through 01/26/16 (and there's still manually splitting a ticket along the Richmond route to milk the 100 points/leg) but the biggest example of this has been on the Cardinal at Dyer: Book a ticket from New York to Dyer in a sleeper, Dyer-Chicago in coach. There's traditionally been a major "penalty" for booking a through ticket (Amtrak wants to "nudge" through pax onto the LSL or Cap because of capacity issues) that is avoided with that, and rumor is that conductors will let you keep your room all the way since the odds of someone buying a Dyer-Chicago room are pretty slim.

Eddie:another option on splitting your ticket on the Maple Leaf between NYP and TWO is that Amtrak offers Business Class in the Cafe/Biz Class Car ( with 2x1 Seating) from NYP to the Border, while technically VIA doesn't from the Border to TWO. (they only offer Biz Class on "Corridor" Trains between Windsor and Montreal.)

But for the Coach Fare, plus $1, you can ride in the Biz Class Car between Toronto and the Border with the VIA Crew in the Amtrak Equipment. They even change out the Cafe Fare @ the stop in Niagara Falls,Ontario during the Crew Change.

And Seniors are anyone over 60 in Canada, so if you're purchasing a VIA ticket you can get the 10% Senior Discount with proff of age. (Passport)
