Gateway Project/New York Penn Station capacity improvement

This tunnel boring machine ran into a ten-foot anchor last year: https://www.cbbt.com/news/project-connect-spring-2024/ It took 10 months to fix the machine, which will delay the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel project about eight months. The pictures are worth a look if you are interested in...

    Tampa Union Station

Brightline makes rail more visible, and the days of safe, reliable highways in key parts of Florida are past. That might be a reason for people to think of Amtrak? Commuter rail and transit improvements also get local coverage, partly because they are starting at a fairly low level, outside of...

Norwalk I-95 fuel tanker fire and closure

And... what sort of Congressional hearings and NTSB investigations will follow? Thanks to Amtrak, and transit, there are passenger travel alternatives. And the highways in NY and New England are often supplemented by safer parkways, restricted to passenger vehicles only, but of course the...

    Texas Eagle discussion

What's the deal with all that paperwork? I suspect every time some issue comes up they add another paperwork requirement. But from the stories here, it would be better to hold conductors accountable and hire more sub-conductors, if that's what they're called. Personnel is expensive, and business...

Future ideas for Atlantic Coast Service

I can guarantee NC people want a NY train. I don't know if NC was early in the 750-mile game, but it purchased rolling stock, unlike VA, as far as I understand it. Outside of train business, Raleigh has vied to be and is part of the NEC. It invested in the Research Triangle orders of magnitude...

Continuing saga of Alaska Air 737 Max plug door blowout incedent

Boeing claimed the falling door plug missed the engine as it was designed to. Dominic Gates went to town on Boeing yesterday in the Seattle Times, in a rather long story: When "Ruthless" Boeing Cut Costs, the Damage Spread. Lots of quotes from experts, lots of connections to Jack Welch...

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

An interesting history of the big crane being used, from the famous Cold War story of the Glomar Explorer raising a Soviet submarine: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-04/what-do-maryland-bridge-and-cia-have-in-common/103667276 An even bigger water-borne crane was used to build the new Tappan...

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Other ports are looking at the issue now, such as Philly. The same concerns are coming up for the four-mile long Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Annapolis to the Eastern Shore), with similar piers. CNN has a story, and in the Baltimore Banner (ex-Sun writers), an Eastern Shore county commissioner is...

NJT rail line to AC disrupted for "several days" due to over-height truck

The bridge should be fixed by the end of the week, that's about all there is in the news. Looks like they're using welding torches to replace the bent parts. It's a freshly painted bridge, at least not obviously some relic. The story, mostly put together from reddit, due to a lack of...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger Locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2Q 2024)

With #356 now delivered, what do folks think will happen when we reach #374, the end of the base order? Perhaps the dual modes?

Japan railway firm pushes Maglev plan to 2034 or later

JR Central would pay for Washington to Baltimore to show it could then go to New York. Somebody at that company really wants maglev to happen. In my possibly wrong opinion, they were heading towards FRA/EIS approval, if it hadn't been opposed (by areas that had previously supported it).

Japan railway firm pushes Maglev plan to 2034 or later

JR Central also offered to pay for the fist leg of Maglev parallel to the Northeast Corridor, Washington to BWI to Baltimore.

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

It had the same clearance, 185 ft., as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (Annapolis to the Eastern Shore), so there's no need. Too bad tugboats had not been required. The place where the harbor pilots get on or off was just downriver from the bridge. Also, if it had blown or drifted off course a tad...

    Empire Service discussion

The Redcaps at NYP are in the Amtrak waiting area, which is closest to the corner of 8th Ave. and W. 31st St. Inside Moynihan, it's on the southeast corner of the grand hall, catty corner from the Walgreens far over in the food court. The Amtrak waiting area has its own restrooms. If you get...

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 H1

I messaged them about possibly lost item and they referred me to a service called ileftmystuff (dot com). It's mainly a service for hotels, and I thought that was reasonable enough. Are you seeing more complaints out of Orlando or Miami / Broward / West Palm, or can you tell?

    Handling in service disabled locomotives

Brightline Florida uses B20 biodiesel in its Chargers, supplied by FPL, branded EarthEra.

Question about Amtrak locomotive emission strategy

I looked up biodiesel (FAME) vs. renewable diesel (HVO). Biodiesel has percentage blends, B5, B20, B100. Renewable diesel is 100% vegetable, made with a different process, and more like conventional diesel. Sometimes it's called RD, but not B100, as far as I can tell. Brightline Florida only...

    Original railroads of current routes

Here's a nice map of the situation in 1855, along with an extensive key, listing the major stops on many routes: https://www.loc.gov/item/gm70005364/ Kalmbach also reprinted the 1928 version, and both were originally Rand McNally. Going back to the 1800s, there were other publishers. The oddest...
