    Thanks, leave on EB today

Just wanted to thank all of you for your help. We leave PDX this afternoon on the Empire Builder, catching the Lake Shore Limited in Chicago, and hopefully arriving in Boston on the evening of the 12th, then on the Downeaster to Portland Maine. We are excited, as this is our first overnight...

    Bkfst, Lunch and Dinner

Okay, Thanks. I thought there had to be some sort of warning. I have the Mac set up with map program and GPS, paper maps for everywhere, so I think we are about ready. We leave middle of next week. Thanks

    Bkfst, Lunch and Dinner

Thanks, but I can't help but ask, what if we are in the lounge car when the person taking reservations comes thru the sleeper?

    Bkfst, Lunch and Dinner

The plan being to get up early for breakfast so I can see Whitefish, and then go to the Lounge and try for a good seat. If I try to get to the LSA at breakfast, can he set me up for lunch and dinner, or is it strictly done by car (mine being last)? This being our first trip, and me not being...

    Bkfst, Lunch and Dinner

Thanks for advice. We are really looking forward to the trip. The challenge may be getting my wife out of bed early enough, but then again with the small beds, it may not be so hard. Thanks for letting me know about Whitefish. I will plan on eating prior to getting there, then head for the...

    GPS On Amtrak

I did do some checking with some GPS experts. Their reply was " As to your question regarding which side of the train will get you better GPS reception when travelling cross country from Portland to Boston, I would say sitting on the South facing side should get you better GPS accuracy. This...

1st Trip, questions about where I am

Thanks George. I have downloaded these, and printed some. They will come in very handy. Thanks for pointing them out to me. We are less than two weeks from the trip, and getting more excited. I will be looking for water towers, etc, and looking forward to seeing parts of the Great USA that...

    GPS On Amtrak

No, now that I think about it I was thinking about WAAS satellites. I don't have to worry about accuracy on the train, so It shouldn't make any difference.

    GPS On Amtrak

I will be taking the Empire Builder From Portland to Chicago, then LSL on to Boston. Knowing that the GPS satellites are primarily to the south, has anyone had any experience with using them on the Empire Builder? Has yours worked on both sides of the train, North and South side, while in a...

1st Trip, questions about where I am

I am currently looking at "Route Buddy" for mac. Reasonable price and may do what I want. I have retired, and I have resisted turning my Mac into a PC, so I don't really want to go there. Any ideas on the carry on from Chicago to Boston? Is there a space in the car where we would have access...

1st Trip, questions about where I am

As much as I would like to have the IPhone, ATT coverage does not extend to my area. I have to use verizon to have coverage in Central Oregon. I see on the internet a program call MacGPSPro, that might fill the bill. Doesn't look like it would be to useful for anything other than this, but I...

1st Trip, questions about where I am

Fortunately for me, but unfortunately in this situation, I switched from PC to Mac about a year ago. I have a couple of old PC laptop's sitting around, but I would much rather take my Mac. I don't want to go off subject here, so, it appears after checking out the Delorme site, and googling...

1st Trip, questions about where I am

I am taking a trip from Portland to Portland (Or. to Me.) on Amtrak and have a few questions. I have had many answered on a previous post, but as the trip gets closer (2 weeks) more pop up. One question is about a carry on bag we are taking on the Empire Builder from Portland to Chicago - we...

    metropolitan lounge chicago

To get back on Subject - we will be coming in to Chicago on the EB, and leaving later that night on the LSL. This will be our first Amtrak trip, our first time in Chicago, and there are a whole lot of other firsts happening as well. We have Roomette reserved for both legs of the trip, and...

    Portland Ore to Portland Me.

Recap of what I have gathered from comments: Flip flops or sandal only for the room or car that I am on. Shoes for the long walk to dining car. Lower room is fine. Might as well try it and see what I think. Check what luggage I can all the way to Boston, but carry on a couple small bags and...

Eating Establishments Near Chicago Union Station

Hey, Thanks. Great idea. I punched Giordanos phone number into my cell phone. We are going to try to go to the observation deck of the Willis/Sears tower as well, so if time permits we will do both, but if a little late we can call for the pizza, and if quite late we will call for the pizza...

Eating Establishments Near Chicago Union Station

We will be coming in on the EB. If on time, arrive CUS about 4pm, Depart on LSL at 910pm. Being the kind that would rather be an hour early than 5 minutes late, what would be the minimum amount of time needed to make it to Giordanos for a Pizza, and still get back to CUS?
