Notes from a round trip from Chicago to Gbb

I had an urge to take a train ride yesterday and the only space left out of Chicago was a roomette to Galesburg and BC back in the Carl Sandburg. At Union station the boarding procedures in the lounge is a bit different. Rather than go down the hall past the bathroom we were directed out the...

Letters sent to Senators and IDOT regarding Amtrak cancellations.

I just sent letters to Durbin, Duckworth, and IDOT regarding the cancelations. This is the letter I sent to all three. Greetings, I am a frequent traveler on Amtrak. I am dissatisfied with the way Amtrak has not handled normally cold winter weather. The Charger locomotives and Venture cars...

CHI to WAS RT on 30 and 29; 12/8 -12/9

This is another one of those "If I don't go on an Amtrak train in A sleeper soon I am gonna snap" trips. After a few reviews of different options, I decided on a quick trip to Washington, D.C. During 1st period I checked ASM and determined 29 made it on time into Chicago this morning with its...

CN trackwork that affectss Saluki on 11/20/23

I am curious to find out if any of this trackwork will address the crossing issues that cause Amtrak to use superliners on the Saluki and Ilini.

Trip report Los Angeles to Chicago by train 4 departing 10/7/23

Yesterday, I flew out to Los Angeles from Chicago. The flight was on time and uneventful. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency and enjoyed the 2 p.m. late checkout. I took an Uber to a pizza place in Long Beach to position myself for a ride on the Blue Line, which would use the new connection to...

Round trip Chicago to Kansas City on 319 and 318.

The boarding process in the station was well organized. They allowed anyone who couldn't walk far to wait in the old metropolitan lounge. I now fit this category for a few reasons. The conductors grouped passengers by destination. I asked to sit in a venture car which was in front of the...

This is a last-minute venture before the start of the new school year. I have been looking at Amtrak, sleeping car fares for the California zephyr all summer. Also saw was 1000 1300 or another high amount for a room up from Emeryville to Chicago is fared are all too high. Then last week I saw...

    Lincoln Service at 110 mph

I booked this trip two weeks ago around the time I read that the spreads had been increased to 110 mph on this route. I followed my normal routine of driving to the White Palace restaurant at the intersection of Roosevelt and Canal. The food is reliably good. Arriving at 6 a.m. usually...

    Acela seating chart

I recall looking at a PDF last year when I booked seats on Acela business class. This document was helpful. I am struggling to find this document. I am hoping someone on here will know where to find it. Google did not help.

A solution for issues with Venture cars?

At some point, it is quite possible for Seimans to have manufactured the majority of Amtrak's equipment. In this case, IMHO it might be an improvement for Amtrak to contract maintenance work to Siemens rather than continue to rely on their own employees to service the equipment.

Amtrak, do you know where your diner is?

I found it sitting on a siding in Kewanee, Il. I was out driving with my dad. It must have been set out for some reason.

UP discouraged employees from reporting freight car defects (per news article)

A UP car inspector claims that they were disconfirm reporting defects on freight cars. The quote from a manager was “56 others are not filing these reports”. https://apple.news/APV5pRClYTu2vPB_rrxUXTg I’m thinking I followed protocol for posting. If I did not let me know and I’ll fix it...

    Chicago METRA

Chicago would definitely benefit from RER-type service. It would be possible to provide run-through commuter trains through Union Station. The infrastructure is already there. BNSF trains could continue north on the Milwaukee line. The Southwest service trains could be extended west and...

First time use of the LIRR East Side Access Terminal in New York City

I decided to take a round trip to New York City over the Presidents’ Day weekend on the Lake Shore Limited. The trip out was consistent with many other trips. Left on time, flex dining and an enjoyable ride in day light from Erie to New York City. One annoyance was that I usually order cereal...

Quick trip on Coast Starlight from LAX to SEA

I live in Chicago, and I had been planning on a Christmas trip. Initially, I thought it would be great to travel by rail to and from Chicago. But I kept reading reports of sleepers being removed and passengers being notified at the last minute. Additionally, the fares were outrageously high...

A successful effort at a trip to St Louis

The trip down on 301 was a good ride. The consist was an amfleet business class car, two horizon cars,, one venture car, and an amfleet one coach on the rear. We departed Union Station on time. Between Dwight and Bloomington we met 300. Then we waited 30 minutes for a NB freight. Then we...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Would be smart for Amtrak to add an order for single-level long distant coaches, dining cars, lounge cars, and sleeping cars. Haveing standardized equipment system-wide would solve many maintenance issues.
