    Chicago to San Francisco

Thanks for the great advice. We'd prefer not to have to go into SF for this trip, we would rather just get our rental car and drive to Sonoma that same day. So we don't need to go all the way to Emeryville, we should just get off at Martinez? Are there rental cars there? How long would it take...

    Chicago to San Francisco

Hello Everyone, We took our first Amtrak trip in a one bedroom on the City of New Orleans last month and enjoyed it so much that we're planning a trip to California. We'd like to get a one bedroom from Chicago to San Francisco then rent a car and drive to Sonoma for a few days. Here are my...

more rookie questions - Chicago boarding for CONO

When we traveled from Chicago a few weeks ago we kept our bags with us in the Metro Lounge. None of the redcaps asked us about checking them but that may have been because we were there less than an hour before we boarded. I would never leave my bags on a seat (or anywhere else) unattended.

more rookie questions - Chicago boarding for CONO

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to let you know how much we LOVED our train trip. It was the first time either of us had ridden on Amtrak and we can't wait to do it again. We had no problems boarding at Chicago and found the Amtrak staff there to be helpful, although not overly friendly. But, hey...

sleeper windows City of New Orleans

Just returned from a trip on the CONO. The windows in the 1 bedroom were huge and offered a lovely view. Can't speak for the roomette windows. Incidentally, if the cost difference is not a problem for you, I would highly recommend getting a 1 bedroom over a roomette. There is a significant...

more rookie questions - Chicago boarding for CONO

Thanks so much to all of you for your wonderful advice. I do have a quick question re: Johnny's suggestion to keep carry-on luggage light since we won't have access to checked baggage. Since we're reserving a one bedroom, we weren't planning to check any bags. I will have a small satchel-like...

more rookie questions - Chicago boarding for CONO

Hello Everyone, I'm sorry if these are obvious questions. We have reserved a 1 bedroom on the City of New Orleans train from Chicago to NOLA tomorrow for Mardi Gras (woo hoo!). This is our first time on a train so I'm wondering if anyone has advice regarding boarding at Chicago's Union Station...

Amtrak trip from Chicago to New Orleans for Mardi Gras

Ok, we've booked it! Looks like we've been assigned to Room D, car 5900. Hope that's a good one. We decided to go arrive the day of the Muses parade -- if we miss it because the train is late, there are about 10 other parades we'll see while we're down there. I'll continue to research this...
