Chefs being removed off Capitol Limited

I just went from Chicago to WAS on the CL earlier in the week. This was my first trip on the CL since 2008, and the experience was definately not as good as I remembered. As others point out, I'm assuming they were using the CCC design, since both the CL and the CONO, which I was on to...

Great, thanks for the good news, and for the quick replies.

Amenities that have disappeared from Amtrak

It's been almost 8 years since I've taken an overnight train, and back then, the SCA served coffee and bottled water, and may have also had snacks available in the sleeping car. Did they really get rid of those "perks"? I'll be on the CONO and the CL in a couple of weeks, but I'm glad I...

    Car 0532 on Zephyr

I may be a bit slow to the party, but when we were on the CZ last month, there was a sleeper in the rear that was let off in Denver, while we continued on to EMY. For some reason, I thought that car was empty, but did it only have people that were going between CHI and DEN? I suppose that car...

    Viewliner vs Superliner Roomettes

I'm 5'7", 150 and had a tough time getting in to the upper bunk in the Superliner roomette! Once I was able to lay down, it was fine, but it was quite strange getting stuck trying to get in to bed. Plenty of room in the viewliner top bunk, though.

    Cross-Country Train Trip

Part 2A: Day in Chicago, then on to Denver At any rate, we had a full day in Chicago before we headed out to San Francisco. I managed to get Cubs tickets for below face-value on StubHub a few weeks before we left, so we all went to the game, but only after a trip to Genos East beforehand (wow...

shutting down the toilets on the CZ

I was on the CZ a few weeks ago, and I don't remember any annoucement about the toilets not working. They seemed to be flushing just fine whenever I needed to use them...

    Lake Shore Limited- Recent Riders?

I was on the LSL a few weeks ago from NYP to CHI. We were in roomettes, and it was a great ride. It didn't seem bumpy through Buffalo and Erie, but I was probably asleep at that point and didn't notice! It was my first experience with the Heritage Diner, and I thought it was comfortable and...

    Cross-Country Train Trip

Part 1 - New Jersey to Chicago We got dropped off at our local NJ Transit station, and then took the NJCL in to Penn. Once we got there, we checked our larger bags, and headed over to the very crowded Club Acela. Fortunately, an Acela and one of the Silvers boarded soon after we got there, so...

    Cross-Country Train Trip

Yeah, trust me, the red-eye was no fun. On the trip west, we barely noticed the time changes. Three days after arriving back east, I'm still trying to adjust to the time change. I suppose not sleeping at all on the flight bay have something to do with it.

    Cross-Country Train Trip

We had taken the CL to Chicago back in 2008, and enjoyed it so much that we decided to take a cross country trip this summer. My wife and I were joined by our 12 y.o. daughter, and my 16 y.o. sister-in-law. It was the SIL’s first Amtrak trip. We bought our tickets back in October, and were...

    Viewliner vs Superliner Roomettes

I just got back home today from a trip on the LSL and CZ from NY to San Francisco (trip report to follow in more detail - in short, it was GREAT). We took roomettes the entire way, so I can give a comparison on the differences between the two types of rooms. There were four of us: my wife and...

    Club Acela Access

Thanks, Alan. yes, the cleaner restrooms should be good, particularly compared to the other ones at Penn... After spending a night in CHI, we are taking the CZ to EMY/SFO, so we will be using the Metropolitan Lounge. Will probably arrive there about an hour before the train leaves. This will...

    Club Acela Access

Thanks for the replies re the Club Acela lounge. I was actually at Penn last night taking the NJCL home from work, and saw where the lounge is. We will be taking the sleeper car to CHI next week, and will have about an hour from the time our NJCL train pulls in until the LSL departs. Lounge...

    Club Acela Access

Where, exactly, is the Club Acela in NY? I've only been to the one in WAS, and thought it was pretty nice. I ask because we will be taking the LSL next week, and am wondering if the Acela waiting room is that room directly next to the NJ Transit waiting area. I know there is an Amtrak lounge...

What's the shortest length you'll regularly ride Amtrak?

I've gone from New Haven to Hartford on the shuttle train a few times. I'll take Metro-North up from NY, and then switch in New Haven. The shuttle train is only $11 bucks or so.

    New Haven transfers to SPG

As others have said, the transfer is very easy at New Haven, particularly when you are heading north. Going back to NY, there may be a lengthy gap, but if you are heading north, the train is right across the platform. Its just a much smaller trainset!

    CL: dinner out of Chicago?

A bit of a side-track here, but when did the CL get the CCC? I thought they still had the full dining car on that train.

    Newbie questions

I second the suggestion on the American Indian museum. It is a real gem of the Smithsonian, and the crowds seemed to be far smaller on the day I visited than it was at Air and Space. I went to the one at the Customs House in NY, and while nice, it was nowhere near as good as the one in DC...

    "The Snack Caboose"

I'm taking the westbound CZ in August, and this article made me smile. I'm looking forward to the trip more and more.
