I have definitely been able to check in and then leave the Auto Train station. They just won't give you a number for your car because they don't want you to drive out with the number.

With 2 kids (teen and child), I would book the 2 roomettes to give everybody some space.

The problem I see if, when you get to the station, you want lunch. You really can't purchase this food at 1 or 2 o'clock and save it until dinner time 5-7:00.
