    VIA Ocean discussion

We are told in discussions on the NEC that many people, especially in Europe, don't seem to mind riding backwards. I doubt this would go over well on the Ocean.

    VIA Ocean discussion

As late as 1987, if I recall the date correctly, the Ocean was turned, car by car, on a turntable near the VIA station in Halifax. This was a tedious process and I believe it was discontinued when the loop track at the container terminal became available.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

This must be Amtrak's version of "Chutes and Ladders" if I can recall the name of the game correctly. At least Amtrak is providing passengers with "alternative transportation" right back to where you started just as if you never left. A true time machine.

    Southwest Chief discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

There is an Amtrak Alert concerning the Southwest Chief: "Service Disruption: As of 2:54 PM MT, due to a freight derailment, Train 3 will terminate in Albuquerque. Customers due to travel past ABQ should deboard in Lamy and board Train 4 back to their original destination."

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

In looking at a few Amtrak menus in my collection it appears that grits probably disappeared from the Lake Shore menu when the Diner Lite service was started. This is what I gather from looking at a 10/2017 Lake Shore diner-lite menu. Menus from a few years earlier when the heritage dining...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

In traditional dining, pre-Covid, grits appeared to be a standard item on all long distance Amtrak trains and I have also had them on the Empire Builder and the Lake Shore, probably on the Coast Starlight as well. I am not sure when they became a standard item on the Amtrak breakfast menu. I...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

That is very true but it would be nice to know that you can obtain things because they are on the menu and not at the whim (or non-whim) of the particular crew.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Pre-Covid, Grits were available and included in most breakfast selections but they are now available only with the continental breakfast. They should be included with all breakfast selections as before. I miss them.

    Texas Eagle discussion

We have a four-car train which operates from Chicago, with a metro population of around 8 or 9 million to San Antonio which has a metro population of two and a half million and somehow the cafe car/diner cannot maintain a sufficient supply of hamburgers and cheeseburgers, which are probably the...

Sounds like a true third-world operation to me. But wait, this is the Texas Eagle which is a third-world operation although it certainly didn't use to be. No thinking outside the box for the benefit of passengers here. P.S. I believe they have supermarkets in San Antonio, maybe even Sysco.

Here is an item about Texarkana: https://www.ktalnews.com/news/texarkana-news/amtrak-resumes-service-to-texarkana/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR3eS_UJP0YtfO2z_sbG7XsHAFnTN4UbefegK2L_INBoq_YxJBWUqlXi2CQ_aem_Ad9_sCitTTH8RNEsMXyFcOxKHJtcL1MbfZ5E01vQTpYBImI9ntYJfR-jwBVJlre8nfrxYzWn3_c7BRlF6GqZqCi2

Southwest Chief trip in 2025 questions

Question 4: Be aware that the waiting area in the Flagstaff station is not spacious. Be sure to check the station hours to be sure that it is open when you plan to wait there. I would recommend checking your luggage at the station the night before you leave instead of in the morning. For a...

    San Francisco/Emeryville, CA

If anyone has stayed at the Waterfront Hotel at Jack London Square in Oakland I would be interested to know what it is like. The prices are not cheap but they seem comparable to some of the hotel prices I have seen for Emeryville. Ten years ago my wife and I stayed several nights at the Inn at...

Glacier National Park, and nearby towns (Whitefish, Essex, East Glacier, West Glacier)

Glad to hear that you are going to Glacier Park. It is a great place. It sounds like you have done a lot of homework and I assume you have checked out the Park website as well. As you have discovered, visiting Glacier without a car is not easy. If you decide to rent a car, you will need to...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

And don't forget, in order to re-create the genuine nostalgic Amtrak Amstew, your Dinty Moore beef stew at home must be served over a bed of rice.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I have some Dinty Moore beef stew 3 or 4 times a year, usually when my wife is away. It is quick and easy. So when I have it on Amtrak, it is like Old Home Week.

I see that 5(15) was delayed leaving Chicago and left 3 hours 42 minutes late. Mechanical issues I guess.

It appears that the earliest date that No. 21 will stop at Texarkana is April 30. The earliest date that No. 22 will stop there is May 1.

Move coach to roomette during trip

I think your plan should work just fine and a call to an Amtrak agent should confirm that. I assume that the roomette is occupied until CIC and that if you book the roomette from CIC, the attendant will clean the roomette and set it up for you after it is vacated at CIC. There might be a...

    Texas Eagle discussion

I see on another list a post indicating that the Texas Eagle is currently not stopping at Texarkana and that ,according to the poster, you cannot buy a ticket to or from there. I don't know if that is true or not and I didn't see anything in Amtrak's service alerts but those are hardly...
