About 20 years ago a group of motorcyclist rented a whole train set. It ran from Michigan or Wisconsin (I think, it was a long time ago) to my home town of Newcastle Wyoming for the annual Sturges Bike week in early August.
They had lots of sleeper and box cars (back when Amtrak still had that...
My standard response to temps on Amtrak:
If you are normally cold, you will be cold.
If you are normally hot, you will be hot.
I am normally hot, so I bring a fan. But I am prepared for it to be too cold. Where you are in a roomette, they have blankets that you can use.

For everyone who thinks a $50 steak meal is "holy hell expense", you have not went out to eat lately. The price of food has went through the roof, Whataburger was under $10 for a combo meal two years ago and is now over $13.
I like everyone had the same knee jerk reaction to the $50 price...
As for temp's at lounges and on the train I have a standard answer:
If you are normally cold, you will be cold.
If you are normally hot, you will be hot.
As for the Chicago lounge, I was comfortable in May when I was there last trip. Now saying that, I am normally hot, which means it was more...
I am booked for a roomette in car 2009 in May. My current understanding is this is a Bag/Dorm and on the rear of the Crescent, is this correct?
Now for the big decision, do I stay with that car or try to get moved to a normal Sleeper? I like the old Viewliner I's. I will be on a Viewliner II...
I did some looking and could not find anything recently. If riding #1 the Sunset Limited out of New Orleans, do they serve breakfast? The Train leaves at 9:00 and normal Amtrak is to be too cheap to do this.
Thanks,
Jim
Many years ago a Harley group out of Michigan or somewhere like that chartered a full Amtrak train to haul them to the Sturgis rally in South Dakota. They parked in my home town of Newcastle Wyoming (only a 40 minute drive away). They put their bikes in baggage cars and the rest was mostly...
My worst experience on Amtrak was having to fly Spirt Airlines.......
I was traveling from Williamsburg VA to Houston TX. Regional from WBG to Washington DC, then the Crescent to New Orleans and the Sunset to Houston. When I hit about Atlanta I got the text that the SSL was cancelled so I...
The TE consist has changed again, it looks like they have added a trans-dorm sleeper.
We are now up to five normal cars (the other day there was six or seven). This mornings south bound was a P42, a Trans-dorm sleeper, a normal sleeper, one of the weird cross country lounge/diner/cafe things...
Normal use to be a P42, a trans-dorm, sleeper, diner, lounge, baggage coach, and two coaches. With the reduced schedule and train it is only: a P42, a sleeper, the diner, a baggage coach, and a regular coach.
Ok, second day in a row that the south bound Texas Eagle was running a short train. A P42 and four coaches. Nothing on the Amtrak Alerts today and the train was "on time" this morning.
Why are they running short for a second day??
So the south bound Texas Eagle lost some time last night north of Little Rock. It went by the Big Sandy Texas web cam about 4 hours late with only one P42 and three coaches.
Does anyone know what happened??
Jim
I had an conductor that said his record was over 30 at one stop. This whole group got off the train and headed to the "historic" depot, he warned then about when the train was leaving and they just said "ok". When the time to leave came, they were still not back and they left.
Here is the REAL answer to the original question.
1. The thermostat, if working, does not do much either way USUALLY. Once in a while you will get a room that works better than normal.
2. The BIG ONE, if you are normally hot, you will roast on Amtrak, if you are normally cold, you will freeze...
Going back to the original post:
My first ride on Amtrak was from Denver to Chicago in coach about 15 years ago. I did not care for the overnight in coach.
Over the last eight or nine years I have switched to roomettes for over night travel and I love it. I have and will do coach for day...
