    Sightseer Lounge etiquette

My thoughts on this.... I would much rather an observation lounge be under-policed than over-policed. I've seen and experienced both. I don't think there should be any time limits set or expected but I also don't think personal items or trash should be allowed to take up any seats / space...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

"Reliability" would only apply to Eastbound trains though since the Builder starts in Chicago, it has as good of a chance of being reliable as the Borealis. Glad to see St. Paul Union Station getting more service - I remember riding past the abandoned station on the Empire Builder after...

Ahh.... there's an easy solution then. Maybe the local government could propose a new tax for the shipyard? hmm???

Oh yeah... I forgot about the transition car. I'm not super familiar with them but that surely adds to the complexity of switching. The loop doesn't physically exist anymore correct? Probably the best solution is a skyline car with rotating seats.

Only the Park car would need to be turned. I actually grew up working at a tourist railroad where we had a turntable - was kinda fun to operate it.

Sorry.. I don't think I understood your point. Originally you said "passenger rail is a significant part of the transportation mix" - I definitely think Chicago qualifies when you count all of the Amtrak corridor trains, Metra, and South Shore.

well... the good news is - there wouldn't be any other trains trying to use that wye! haha.

Did you overlook Chicago and the various corridors? Cascades Corridor gets an honorable mention as well. And of course North Carolina is trying but it's got a long ways to go but still they are pushing for everything they can and getting somewhere.

There is a wye at Windsor, but you'd have to cut the engines off and run them around and you'd need the whole wye cleared - no other trains waiting (not sure if that's a busy area or not). But yes, you could wye the inbound train at Windsor, run the locomotives around so they could pull the...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Yes, and no. I get what you are saying but the more thought and effort is put in to the menu the more that people will be satisfied. The current dinner menu is pretty limited but it does have some good options that will please most guests. I'd still love to see a return of the specials like...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

Oh I see... I guess it's different definitions. I know many "vegetarians" that eat cheese no questions asked but I didn't really stop to think about it! That is another disappointment for taking baked potatoes off the menu - that's a good vegetarian item for lunch and dinner. While not every...

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 H1

That's going to be a busy place!!! Glad they are planning rail transit as a part of this but goodness... anyone that's been through MCO knows it's already a bit crazy.

You can always ask - each crew runs things a little differently. You can't technically order a side of potatoes for example but sometimes I can get them as a side to my french toast or pancakes.

It's a huge step up - you also have some salad options. Even the cheese and cracker tray is a huge step up from anything I've had in Flex!

    Horn noise and fumes

Many years ago I was in the Trans-dorm on the City of New Orleans with a single locomotive and no baggage car. I don't remember the fumes being an issue but I do remember the horn was pretty bad. I like the noises of the train but with no buffer that horn is loud!

    SEPTA cancels contract with CRRC

Do they have a choice? Many government agencies have to take the lowest bid.

    Tipping on Amtrak

Well.. Acela is mostly competing with Air Travel - I don't think I've ever seen a 1st Class FA get tipped. So I don't think that role would usually get tipped.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe Service discussion 2024 H1

I believe it's mostly a staffing issue. There are trains originiating from NOL, CHI, and NYP that have full service dining.

I do not think that is a correct statement. I think the vast majority of people would prefer to ride forwards in the direction of travel. As far as brightline is concerned... they should be flipping seats as well but we finally got them to take off those terrible wraps so one victory at a time...

    Philadelphia Metropolitan Lounge access

This seems like an ADA issue... if you have to go out of your way to find someone to run the elevator, that is an inconvenience that others don't have. Seems like there could be a simple solution to this - a call button to the lounge attendant for example.
