    Cheese Steak at 30th Street

I guess I'm too late to be useful for the original poster, but... I used to work at 31st and Market. My opinion is that in general, the food in that area kinda sucks. Best places in the station itself were the deli (can't remember the name, it's across from the ice cream place which is across...

What to see near New York Penn station 4.5 hour layover

Actually, one of the better pizza places, Rose's, is in Penn Station. I work nearby and I have gone into the station more than once just to get a slice there. Here is a review.

How to handle the TSA? Take Amtrak!

This is a significant reason why I have avoided flying ever since 2001. Partly just because it's annoying, like the cramped seating, but also partly because it makes me angry to be reminded about the paranoia that has overrun so many areas of American life. Do you remember what it was like to...

    New York to Chicago

I didn't see anyone with a guitar, but there was plenty of overhead space. There is so much leg room that you wouldn't have any problem keeping it between your legs, either, but I doubt it would be necessary.

Where should I go this weekend?

You can split most of the major tourist attractions into those in Midtown and those in the Financial District. Penn Station is in Midtown, and within a 10 minute walk of Times Square (which is at the intersection of 42nd Street, 7th Avenue, and Broadway), and the Empire State Building. Other...

Should I wait to see if it gets discounted..

You can get a full refund any time before the train departs, so if you can buy it now, I would just go ahead and do so now. Then if a better discount comes along, you can get a refund and then buy the ticket with the discount.

    New York to Chicago

Well, given that I don't have a driver's license anymore, I hadn't even considered driving to be an option. I was really thinking train versus airplane or bus. But, back when I did drive, I made quite a few cross-country road trips -- about 20 or so -- and they were enjoyable in their own way...

    New York to Chicago

The wedding was interesting. My brother and his wife come from quite different backgrounds. Perhaps not as different as me and my wife, but that's a whole other story. I saw a couple of my cousins for the first time, and some aunts and uncles for the first time in a decade. Also, separately I...

    New York to Chicago

When I was in the Customer Service office trying to get my bag, there were quite a few people who arrived late on the Capitol Limited who had missed their connections. So apparently that bus was slower for some reason. That might have been what you heard about. The interesting thing I noticed...

    New York to Chicago

So, I live in New York and my brother is getting married in Chicago this Saturday, March 31. I have taken intercity trains in a few other countries before, but never before here, in my home country. So I am going to offer some comparisons to other rail systems. Before this trip, I looked at the...

    Canadian Currency

Back when I used to live in Seattle (about 3 blocks from King Street Station), the only currency exchange around was in Westlake Center, on the top floor. It is relatively easy to get to (go to the International District Station next door and take any bus to Westlake Station, or alternatively go...

Sharing a sleeper between two branches

To clarify, what I was thinking of purchasing was something like: 1. roomette from New York to Albany for 1 2. coach from Boston to Albany for 1 3. roomette from Albany to Chicago for 2 Which can obviously be done as three separate tickets. But I was wondering if there was a more...

Sharing a sleeper between two branches

So, I live in New York, and I am attending a wedding in Chicago. A friend of mine, who is probably also attending the wedding, lives in Boston. The Lake Shore Limited starts from both New York and Boston, combines at Albany, and then goes to Chicago. Would it be possible for the two of us to...
