I would say the rockies west of denver are the most dramatic.

The southwest chief isn't much for scenery. I would say the Zephyr and the Builder would be the best trains, but you don't want to miss the Starlight from San Francisco to L.A. It's a tough call, but i would say to take the Zephyr.

Is South Bend a smoking stop? I don't think they're all indicated on the schedules, but people who ride the train often would know. If it was you'd have plenty of time.

I wouldn't worry about travelling by coach for 2 nights. The seats are comfortable and maybe if youre lucky, even have 2 seats to stretch out on. I recently spent 5 straight nights in the coaches and did just fine (remember to bring shampoo and other soaps and stuff). If all else fails, bring a...
