    Charlotte to Kissimmee; frustrating experience

I undertook an epic journey this summer. Two trains, the Texas Eagle and the Southwest Chief, were each delayed by seven hours. I did not miss any connections, but received two vouchers for $50 each towards future travel within the next year. OTOH, the Coast Starlight I was on was involved in...

What does your Forum User Name mean?

A few years ago, I developed an interest in cycling and bought a recumbent trike. I rode a trike when I was five years old and I find myself riding a trike again, so apparently I must be in my SecondChildhood.

    Amtrak Coach discussion

I take earplugs (and a sleep mask) with me. Taking a sleep aid will also help. A small pillow behind my back for lumbar support, one to rest my head against the window if I get the window seat. A light blanket. When I’m ready to sack out, I have a small overnight bag I can take to one of the...

Amtrak announces Simplified Fares coming soon

To my knowledge, canceling a card account does not mean if a previous charge is reversed, the card company doesn’t still have the responsibility to return those funds to you. They would have to issue a check to do so, but still. I worked in online retail, and this question would occasionally...

    Amtrak Customer Relations regarding compensation

For anyone interested, I received my reimbursement check today. Sent five emails, received one response asking for my mailing address but no verification that my claim was approved.

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

I’m certain I was recalling the Mendon wreck, almost exactly one year earlier and similar circumstances, as I was silently pleading with the cars to stay upright. I wish I could say I had a plan of action devised if they did tip over, but it happened too quickly for me to think that far ahead...

    Amtrak Customer Relations regarding compensation

Thanks, but I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that. As pennyk suggested, I’ll likely have a response in due course, but of course I don’t want to wait forever. I’ve worked in customer service, and I know sometimes the wheels can grind exceedingly slow. It would have been nice to simply get an...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

That, I don’t know. I was towards the front and figured I should stay out of the way of any emergency crews, so I didn’t go down there.

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

I haven’t heard. My impression was that he pulled out in front of the train, as there was not any significant slowdown or frantic horn action before the collision. He was fortunate enough to be hospitalized in serious condition and not killed. He was conscious, so I’m sure he gave his story...

Coast Starlight hits truck in Ventura County CA, partially derails (6/28/23)

Waiting for Moorpark city buses to pick us up. Later on, tents were set up and snacks and water provided. No clue why it took three hours to get buses to the scene. Otherwise, no complaints on how Moorpark and Ventura County handled the situation.
