a thank you to y'all, for being here.....

We are down to 48-hours and counting on our first long-distance Amtrak trip. Tomorrow I start gathering everything from my myriad of lists, and condense and cull and cram (our personal) necessities of modern life into our 4 carry-on bags. The stress of not knowing what we are in for would be so...

holding bags at kansas city union station

Thanks for the help. I don't know why the website says KCY doesn't offer bag holding, but am guessing that any station that offers checked-bag service would have a system in place to hold bags too. And since a couple of you have personally done so.....gonna assume that this is an option for us...

holding bags at kansas city union station

We will have several hours to kill before getting on the SWC, and one of my ideas is to walk across to Jack Stack BBQ for beverages and BBQ. But can't schlep our bags with us (we are not checking bags, doing carry on only). Amtrak.com says no, the station does not hold bags. Is this correct and...

    redcap service disembarking at LAUS

    redcap service disembarking at LAUS

DH is mobility challenged, as in I need to try to minimize the amount of walking he has to do. I understand that disembarking at LAUS there is a long tunnel to walk, and I need and would hope to snag Redcap service. Are they like waiting around when a long-distance train gets in (we're on the...

    ummm.....toilets on long-distance train cars

Re: a restroom on the SSL: you know, I'm thinking that yeah, I'm a newbie, but.....this is the kind of thing that should be basic and available and advertised as such (barring unforeseen mechanical breakdowns, which can happen in any mode of travel I realize). But the way y'all are talking, this...

    ummm.....toilets on long-distance train cars

Thanks y'all. I figured that the SSL, at least, would have a restroom, but couldn't find anything to confirm this.

    ummm.....toilets on long-distance train cars

No biggie, but I'm curious. I've researched our upcoming trip to death, but cannot figure this one out, in spite of looking at all of the diagrams and videos and virtual-walkthroughs..... SWC, for example, superliner trainset: do the diner (upper level) and/or the SSL (or snackbar, lower level)...

a silly little question re: CPAP machine onboard

Thank you. Good to know we probably won't need one - but I will pack a short one to broaden our options, just in case. As Sky Pilot said, it'll probably come in handy in our hotel rooms too.

a silly little question re: CPAP machine onboard

We are newbies on the SWC KCY-LAX in March, in a bedroom. DH uses a CPAP w/humidifier. He says there is no concern with "sloppage" as his machine works well on lesser amounts of water. But I'm thinking I'm gonna have to plan for an extension cord to allow for his power. I'm guessing that the...

    "train status via text message"

Thanks! Will try to test it out this week.

    "train status via text message"

In your FAQ section Mister Toad had nicely set up a system to allow for texts to let one know about the status of any Amtrak train. But I've seen no mention of it since the original thread posted in Sept. of '11. We have hours to kill in KCY before embarking, and this would be helpful to us, to...

    Southwest Chief Arrival Time

Unfortunately that's just what we have to do: get on the 101 toward Hollywood, to the Harbor Fwy. southbound.

    Southwest Chief Arrival Time

Freeways better after 10 am: check. That helps. (I understand that the traffic won't be GOOD, just looking to miss the worst of rush hour.) Am sure that Phillipe serves a great breakfast too, but "saving" it for a lunch later in the sense that we'll probably never get back to Los Angeles. Ever...

newbie questions: SWC trip March '13

Yep, I had planned for him to "test" the booths at some point to see if he's comfortable enough (thanks for the tip on him watching for the tablecloth! I'll be sure to tell him.) :) You're right, when we first get on would be the best time as the dining car would be empty. Our being in the...
