    Chicago to CT

Dan O, I became curious as to the CHI to OSB trip and checked out the Amtrak Reservations site. I will simply concur with the sensible suggestions already offered , that is , the CL to WAS and a Reginal to OSB. That was actually $15 cheaper than the CL to PGH to NYP to OSB. Only drawback is...

    CHI to WAS

Jay, Sorry to hear about your bad experience at Union Station in Chicago. My recent experience their was great. Everyone I dealt with could not have been more polite and helpful. Came in on the Lincoln Service and caught the Capitol Limited to Pittsburgh. On the reverse trip I had a simlar...

Chicago to Springfield, MO passenger train

Thanks George. That makes sense. I knew that the Frisco served Springfield but not Chicago. And I knew that we didn't change trains. I guess that is an example of cooperation among the roads to provide "seamless" service.

Chicago to Springfield, MO passenger train

I would like to ask if anyone knows what railroad would have provided passenger service between Chicago and Springfield, Missouri? When I was quite young, in the early 1950's, we rode a streamliner to Springfield. It was an overnight train and I slept in a berth. I vaguely remember the color...

U.S. must boost support for Amtrak

Olympian Hiawatha, I am glad to hear that Oklahoma has been supportive of the Heartland Flyer. If only they could get Kansas to support it so that it would connect in Kansas City that would be great. I am amazed that Missouri keeps subsidizing the Mule and Ann Rutledge. The KC to St. Louis...

U.S. must boost support for Amtrak

I was reading the Sunday's St. Louis Post Dispatch Travel Section today and found this article on page 2: "U.S. Must Boost Support for Passenger Rail System". The article was authored by Arthur Frommer. He is syndicated by King Features Syndicate out of New York. It is a cogent and concise...

Philadelphia, Lancaster, Chicago, St. Louis Chapter III

We had a good trip riding the trains from St. Louis to Lancsater. Every train was ontime or early. We spent several days in the Lancaster, PA area with relatives. The Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish countrside is picturesque. There are some great chocolate shops in the area, Hershey being the...

Looking for information on the Rocket that went out of Peoria

Sorry Gingee, this reply is not about Peoria but it is about the Rock Island Rocky Mountain Rocket. When I was 15 years old I took the Rocky Mountain Rocket from Chicago to Denver and on to Colorado Springs. The Rocket passed through Nebraska at night. I was a coach passenger and had fallen...

St. Louis to Lancaster, PA Chapter II

After we arrived, courtesy of #302 at CUS only 12 minutes late, we went directly to the Metropolitan Lounge. CUS was bustling with passengers. It reminded me of the old days. Speaking of which, the old days that is, I couldn't help remembering entering Union Station when I was a child. We...

St. Louis, MO to Lancaster, PA Chapter I

We left our home about 4:30 AM to catch the 6:35 #302 Lincoln Service to Chicago. We arrived in downtown St. Louis while it was still dark. Market Street was lit up with lights in the many trees. The Old Courthouse was brightly illuminated. And the Arch reflected the many lights of the city...

St. Louis to Pennsylvania by rail

Last week my wife and I traveled from St. Louis to Pennsylvania. We rode the Lincoln Service to Chicago, the Capitol Limited to Pittsburgh, and the Pennsylvanian to Lancaster. We traveled Business Class and sleeper (bedroom). The Amtrak personel, starting with the station, crummy though it be...
