Put the seat numbers on electronic displays and adjust them according to the direction the train is pointing. Voila—seat 1A is always front left and facing the same direction every time.
Also note that the suburban Acela stops of BWI and MET are “directional,” favoring day trips from BWI to NYP and from MET to WAS. The weekday Acela schedules don’t really support a day trip in the opposite direction.

My rule of thumb: for trains terminating in WAS, no problem getting a seat pair in BAL. For trains continuing into Virginia, no guarantees on a Friday or Sunday.
