I read that book "Badlands" by Jonathan Raban, about the settlement of Montana along the rail line, it sure made it clear that the history of Montana was driven by the railroads as much as anything. It's an interesting book, well written, have any of you read it? People were drawn out to brand new towns along the the line by advertising and promotion, they tried to farm the high prairies but a lot of people left after the first big drought. A lot of them kept going west after that and ended up in Seattle. There are still families there though, whose ancestors settled in the 1910s along the railroad.
