Penn Station to JFK Airport

Recommended Posts

If you are traveling on the LIRR over the weekend to Jamaica, buy a (day of) city ticket for like half off, and it won't be a dollar or so more than the subway fare $ hikes coming up.

From the NYC TLC website:

To/From JFK and any location in Manhattan:

  • Onscreen rate is ‘Rate #02 – JFK Airport.’
  • This is a flat fare of $52 plus tolls, the 50-cent MTA State Surcharge, the 30-cent Improvement Surcharge, and $4.50 rush hour surcharge (4 PM to 8 PM weekdays, excluding legal holidays).
  • Passenger is responsible for paying all tolls.
  • Please tip your driver for safety and good service

Way more than RR + Airtrain for a couple, a group of 4, not terrible if you are on peak fare hours.

Is there some reason that the tolls between midtown and JFK aren't always the same?  If so, why not factor the tolls into the flat fare, install an EZ Pass on the cab, and avoid confusing financial transactions at the end of the trip? That, by the way, is one of the things I like about Uber/Lyft, they give you the price quote before you step in, and payment is automatic;  no need to fiddle with your wallet in the confined space of a taxi back seat.

A medallion cab in NYC is required to use an ez-pass, the passenger pays the ez-pass discount toll. However, there are locations in Manhattan or certain situations where it may make sense to use a crossing that has no toll. In those cases, pre charging for the toll would be unfair. (pun apology)
