Twenty killed, dozens injured as trains collide in Italy

By Vincenzo Damiani, Reuters

BARI, Italy (Reuters) - Twenty people died and dozens were injured when two passenger trains collided head-on in southern Italy on Tuesday ...

The force of the impact crumpled carriages and sent debris flying into an olive grove that flanked the single stretch of track ...

"Unfortunately the death toll has risen to 20," said Giuseppe Corrado ...

There was no immediate indication of what had caused the two trains to be traveling toward each other on the same line ...

The trains each had four carriages. A photograph released by the fire brigade showed that three carriages had disintegrated under the impact, suggesting at least one of the trains had been traveling at high speed.

Yes. The loss of life is regrettable and our sympathies go to the victims surviving family and friends.

Regardless how much is invested in safety can there are oodles of ways people die prematurely.

We are still way more likely to meet an accidental early end in our own homes as opposed to an end in a train crash.

Then too, at some point expenditures to improve safety become less effective because improvements save few additional lives.

It seems from the recent news that the system in operation over that section of single track had some sort of "telephone message" signaling???

The simple old fashioned "token" system could have prevented this crash. If worked as designed, only one token is released from the machines at any one time... No token? Engineer will not move the train for love nor money!

I've heard of issues with timetable and train order systems before leading to cornfield meets, usually in the form of copping the wrong order down.
