I caught the eastbound California Zephyr in Agency, Iowa this morning with one engine leading it. Amtrak #6(20) happened to be running on the left track to pass a coal train. Although noticeably just a bit slower than usual, the train wasn't doing too bad with one unit since it was only about half an hour late.
I believe this #6 left its other locomotive in Denver. The westbound Zephyr that left Chicago yesterday, Amtrak #5(21), is reported to have had a mechanical problem with one of its units and had to set it out at Wyanet, Illinois. I'm guessing #5 picked up #6's unit in Denver to have two engines for the mountains since that's what happened last month. #5(21) is now running around three hours late in Colorado.
