It's been reported here that the Amtrak train #6 that left California on the 21st left behind its then-lead locomotive, AMTK 202, in Denver on Friday. The train then left with AMTK 75 leading on its own. This didn't slow down the California Zephyr that much as it was forty minutes late when it came through Agency, Iowa.

5 needed it more than 6. Besides, maybe having one less coach makes all the difference in maintaining the schedule. More likely, it is fat! ;)

I would guess that Amtrak needs two for the mountains, but only one for the flat land.
