Why is 5/28 Zephyr #5 six hours late?

Does anyone know? is six hours "dog bites man"?

(It's somewhere in CO now when it should be deep into UT. We are boarding in SLC and should probably get a hotel room.)
 
Another rail site reports storms and flooding have slowed the CZ. The poster speculated SLC arrival might be in daylight. A hotel room sounds like a good plan, but stay in touch with Amtrak during the night. Sometimes trains make up time, and sometimes they lose more!
 
I have seen the FB Amtrak sight have twitter posts. If you tweeted that question about the CZ to Amtrak would they answer quicker?
 
#5/28 was stopped for four hours last night at the Ottumwa depot. I heard there may have been a flood or a washout east of Chillicothe. Must not have been too bad if they were able to get trains through.
 
5am departure from SLC, not fun and makes the sleeper much less worthwhile.

At least you can take a long nap in your sleeper after departing SLC, lying down on your bed while passengers in the coaches struggle for a comfortable position.

I checked on Amtrak Delays and it was VERY late going into SLC on 29 May yet early into EMY. Did it suddenly become the bullet train?
 
I'm not sure what you were looking at, but the train wasn't early into EMY:

Is the Des Moines River at Ottumwa the new Devils Lake?

I heard there may have been a flood or a washout east of Chillicothe.
Is this MO (SWC) or IL (old SWC route east of Galesburg)?

The Des Moines River at Ottumwa wasn't the problem. The California Zephyr was held at Ottumwa apparently because there was a washout at a creek bridge just east of Chillicothe, Iowa.
 
I have a friend on (I Believe) the now 4 hour late CZ. If not he was on the CZ that arrived 30 mins early into EMY. I'll pick the later because he has real good luck.
Because #5 is SCHEDULED into SLC before midnight, you were probably looking at the DAY AFTER train -- you would need to check for the #5 scheduled to arrive in SLC on the 29th, to see how late it actually arrived in the wee hours of the morning on the 30th.
