My daughter, her husband and son are on the Empire Service #280 from Utica NY this morning. They are scheduled to take the Crescent #19 that departs NYP at 2:15pm. #280 was scheduled to arrive at 12:50pm but is running 21 minutes late at this time.

They have passed the wreck site that caused a lot of delays theses past few days. Is there padding in #280 schedule?

They have sleeper tickets on #19. Should she start contacting Amtrak about making different arrangements?

If it's a guaranteed connection and #280 is not running too late, I suspect they'll hold #19 for them. She should let the conductor on #280 know that they're making the connection to #19. S/he should be able to help if the timing is tight.

Scheduled arrival is 12:15, ETA at this point is 1:10pm and the train doesn't leave until an hour after that?

I'd say that it'll be just fine.

Edit: Current status us 1:17, leaving an hour to make the transfer, that's plenty of time.

There is some padding in the schedule. Also at ALB there is an engine change. It may also depart in less time than the scheduled stop time if it is running late. And most of the run south of ALB is at 90+MPH!

I wouldn't worry, but she can let the conductor know if they are still late.

Was an engine change in ALB, they left there an hour ago.

Another update for you:

It departed Poughkeepsie at 12:01 and is expected to arrive at 1:24 now. Plenty of time. :)

Waiting to hear from her. I know they got in at 1:19 only 29 minutes late. They should be leaving on the Crescent now. Waiting for Amtrak Status to update.

For the record there isn't an engine change in Albany just a crew change on #280. I've ridden it tons of times.

Only the Maple Leaf, Aderondack (and Lake Shore Limited with the split/meet of the Boston section) get their engines changed from dual-mode P32AC-DMs to P42s for their portions beyond Albany.

The two through daily Empire Service Trians (including #280) and Ethan Allen Express don't have engine changes running with their P32AC-DMs through to Niagara Falls or Rutland.
