I did the same thing, except by contacting my Federal representative instead of my senator. I was able to visit the White House, the Pentagon, the Library of Congress, the Capitol building, and perhaps one or two other places by contacting them. (I did this over a four day span, however.)
I highly recommend contacting your Federal rep or senator if you wish to do those tours. It's very much worth it, and they make it pretty simple to do.
