I was thinking about doing a round trip on the SWC, using the 2.5 hour layover between trains in Las Vegas, NM to head back east. Is there a restaurant to walk for lunch if there is time, and what is the station like?

There's a restaurant right around the corner called El Fidel on Douglas. It's open for lunch until 2 and then closed until dinner time. As far as the train station the city has a tourist information center right inside and there should be a volunteer to answer questions.

The Las Vegas station was restored with a grant to be an intermodal facility. In addition to being an Amtrak stop, it also serves a local bus and has a taxi office, in addition to the visitor center. It is a beautiful station; how much longer it may be used by the Southwest Chief remains to be seen.

Douglas & 7th - about 3 blks from station. :) Up Lincoln to 7th, up 7th to Douglas, around the corner on the left.
