Passenger jet pilots fell asleep on flight carrying 159 passengers

A sleep-deprived new father of twins and his co-pilot are accused allowing their airliner with 159 people on board to veer off course after they both fell asleep for nearly 30 minutes in the cockpit midair, officials in Indonesia said.

This is going to be an incredibly stupid questions, but are there problems with air supply (coupled or caused by poor maintenance) in the cockpit?

Certain auto’s have a safety feature that recognises if the driver is sleepy, and responds with alarms or even stops the car if necessary. Railroad locomotives have long had similar “alerter’s”. Surprised they don’t have similar in cockpits…

Perhaps they thought them unnecessary since there were at least 2 crew members in the cockpit.

Just as on streetcars, they didn't have "deadman" controls in the days of 2 man crews since presumably the conductor could stop the car if something happened to the motorman, but once they went to one man operation, they had to add the dead man features.

Seems like planes run into trouble when both pilots are incapacitated (or it seems that when it happens, it may be a bigger, insurmountable problem).
