Now that the rail odyssey will wrap up in about three hours, I ask myself: Have I enjoyed this mode of travel?
Absolutely.
Would I be willing to go this way again?
By all means, if the destination is on an Amtrak route and I'm not pressed for time. A relevant measure of anything being evaluated is the answer to the question: What would it be like if everybody did this?
If everybody made rail his accustomed mode of travel, both locally and long-distance, then the Amtrak system could, and surely would, expand to include such currently unserved outposts as Sioux Falls, S.D., Casper, Wyo., and Lubbock.
Because rail is the most fuel-economical mode of land transport there is, if everybody went to rail, the savings in fuel for this nation would take it giant steps toward energy independence.
