We are traveling on the California Zephyr on June 23-24 and am concerned about the fire raging near Fort Collins, CO. That appears to be about an hour north of Denver. Does anyone know if it is likely to impact the train route, and if so what happens? Thanks!

One would hope the fire is out, or under control by then.

However if it gets close to the tracks, train travel will become a bus or worse cancelled with no alternative provided. It's a game day call. So be sure you got space on your credit card, a charged cell phone, a bag of nuts, and a bottle of water.

Travel, sometimes it's routine, and other times it's a adventure.

To answer the question: as long as the fire stays where it is, it should have no impact on the California Zephyr. The fire is in Laporte, CO, which is over 50 miles away from the closest point on the Zephyr route.

It's closer to the detour route used when the train operates via Wyoming, but even then, it's unlikely that there would be any significant impact.

I heard a long time ago, around 1910, there was a train in Minnesota which got caught in a forest fire, but the train actually made it out of the fire. Then again, this is virtually impossible today because the train would be pre-notified and it would not run straight through the fire. The fire probably won't even reach the tracks in your case.

If the fire is still going in two weeks AND has moved 50 miles south and is threatening Denver, not only will your train be cancelled, you'll hear about it on the national news, FEMA will probably be involved, and Amtrak may be assisting in the evacuation of Denver. Don't worry about it; it's unlikely and if it happens a lot more people than you will be dealing with it.

Let's NOT freak out an already worried OP.

Coming from someone who learned a little bit about wildfires in Firefigher I classes you have nothing to worry about. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your ride on the CZ.
